They're being eroded on both sides of the big pond because liberals want to be your mommy, and conservatives want to be your daddy.

Actually, being quite an old person, it seems to be that people these days have a lot more "rights" especially when it comes to disrupting the lives of others. There was a time for example, when you could call the police to tell the neighbours to turn it down - now you can't even give a thug a clip round the ear if he throws a stone at you. Eroded rights? I don't think so

Most law is a response to problems on the street, even when it is disproportionate. Part of the problem is that for whatever reason lager louts, football hooligans, foolish adolescents etc are more common here than in some other european countries. Possibly because we have a high population density which is a proven cause of social ills. To top it off UK socialists have always been notable for the amount of legislation, often questionable, they introduce. They always shrink from targeting the perpetrators directly and uncompromisingly.

yeah, you'd have expected Labour to be more aware of and protective of our rights, but the opposite has happened. Think of the communists in the eastern bloc, Cuba and anywhere else, however, and it's not so surprising, as they were hell-bent on restricting rights and suppressing free speech.

Still, we talk far too much about rights and not enough about responsibilities. Everyone demands rights, normally the ones who are already getting more than their share, but remind the same people of their responsibilities, and they go deaf!
