No. Excellent work doesn't come to a person just because of torment. There's so much more in life that we feel and writting is an expression of what you feel. If internal torment is all that a person feels, than that is probably what they write about. Such as Edgar Allen Poe. But not everyone writes from a dark place.

It is quite often how the good stuff is made-musical, artistic, and literary works. At least a torment that says...keep writing...keep working. dedication to expression.
in short-not necessary, but it helps.

Sometimes for some types of writing. Poe felt cursed because everyone he got close to died.
