you mean the shape and sequence of those characters? They have their origins in arabic.

Be happy about that otherwise you would likely be writing todays date as ii / xxi /mmvii. Balancing your checkbook would be hell.

The early humans created numbers; even before they became humans. When Og-gash went out hunting, he said "you 2 guys come with me, we're going to get 3 rabbits and 1 deer." That's numbers.

Did you mean "numerals"? That's the shape of the numbers that we write, which is a different thing.
