Dark Energy is the reason why scientists are pondering upon Dark Matter. Thats where the speculation of mutiverse / multiple dimensions come into play. Based on the known size of the visible universe (which is for sure less than the actual size), scientists say that the matter that we see occupies just 4% of the universe. Rest 96% is filled with dark energy...which might be due to dark matter. Take gravity for example.....some string theory scientists speculate that gravity is weak because it is spread across mutiple dimensions, which we can see from a 3rd dimension perspective.

Vacuum energy and dark energy are two different forms of energy.

Vacuum energy comes from virtual particles that are always popping up and then disappearing in a vacuum before they can have an effect on the universe. Scientist know these particles exist because they have added enough energy to a vacuum to allow the virtual particles to stay around long enough to detect.

Dark energy is a force that is the opposite of gravity and is driving the expansion of space faster and faster. Astronomers have measured the speed at which galaxy clusters are moving away from each other and have found that the speed was less billions of years ago than it is today. So they use the term "dark energy" to explain the increasing speed of expansion.
