During the cold war the USA would support any country which shared their attitude to Communism, including the far-right government in S. Africa, and, incidentally, Saddam Hussein. So after the end of the cold war they got tough on a few of their old buddies, including the government of S. Africa, and, incidentally, Saddam Hussein.

Which cold war? Russia? Probably because they stopped with the communist uproar B.S. and realized that not everyone was the "bad guy". In the early 1900's, communism was dubbed a "crime" and everyone was suspected of being a spy,a traitor, etc. Look up communism and read about it. Depends on which "cold war" you're referring to. Which era? Cold war means a war that is strong but not so much to the point of physical violence. There's a lot of those on record.
