...why wouldn't you continue to go without once Easter arrives?

See, I dont give something up...I make a point of doing something for Lent. I mean, like doing something for others. I lend more of my time than normal. (ex: I volunteer, so I do more hours through Lent...) But, once Lent is over I dont cut short the hours...it just keeps on going. So, I guess what Im trying to say is...I dont give up something for Lent, I give more of myself.

The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.

By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.

In spite of what Martin Luther stated in his first thesis, our whole life does not need to be spent in penance. We are also called to celebrate the love and life God has given us.

However if you give up a bad habit like sarcasm or endeavor to do some good work then it would be wonderful to keep up the effort after Lent.

With love in Christ.

Um, isn't that a Catholic thing? I dont need to prove my love to the Lord by practicing something that was made up by a certain religion. Especially a religion that thinks good works is the key to Heaven and wont allow it's leaders to marry!

Well, I'd probable go for the whole concept of lent if I could find any Biblical reference to it.

I usually give up lent for lent because I'm a jerk like that and have to hide my atheism. I hate religion.
