The best way i think would be to gradually cease making contact and let the friendship slide. I did this and it took a month but it did the trick. She knew without me having to say anything hurtful. It may have hurt her that i wasn't up front and told her but like you I didn't want to say anything hurtful.

You ARE going to upset them. Just because you don't say anything mean doesn't get you off the hook. It bothers me more when people try to avoid people so they can still seem like the "good guy." I feel like you are trying to avoid responsibility for your feelings by refusing to admit them directly and deal with your "friend's" reaction. It sounds like you don't want to be "mean" because you don't want your "friend" to dislike you. Yet you dislike her/him! You have to be willing to have him/her dislike you if you feel that way towards them or it's dishonest.
I suggest you be honest and tell the person you just don't feel compatible. You don't have to be particularly mean about it, but don't lead them on or keep them guessing. You will seem even more mean. And untrustworthy! Dropping hints is cruel; it messes with people's minds and victimizes them. Just be real.
Also, I think that to not to get rid of them completely (because you might need them someday) is really hurtful. That's using someone. Don't use them for your benefit. Drop them all together. Cut all ties. If you don't want to cut all ties, then talk to the person about being casual friends. Just don't play guessing games.

gradually distance yourself with her, that's what i did. i had the most annoying friend who tried to run my life, i started going out with other friends, she was jealous and ooh, so after a while she fucked off, she still speaks about me, but i rise above it. see now? i have a great life, don't have an annoying friend, because they will make you feel down. get rid, and be happy, find friends that are good to you ,like you are good to them, x

I just stopped talking to my 'best friend' when she had fucked me and my sis over and carried on with my life. I ignored her for 9 days after she f'ed up, talked to her and gave her a chance, and all she did was get even more bitchy and annoying!!!! So I started ignoring her again and eventually she sent a text saying 'we are NOT friends anymore' and proceeded to delete me off myspace. she made all the moves, I just did my school work and carried on with my own life.

Why bother trying to be nice if you don't want them to be your friend? Just be direct and if you want to play nice, then piss them off, and then use that as an excuse.

Not possible. Helpful I know, but if you've portrayed 'friendship' to this person then they will feel rejected when you cut them off.

try the truth, see if you can help your friend cope with the truth, they may then see you as a true friend
