Would you use a rotary cutter for cutting out a pattern, ( laid out on fabric) or is it used for quilting, or is it used just for certain angles on a sewing project?

I use mine for quilting. With a cutter and a guide, I get really straight edges, really fast. They're also perfect for cutting patterns in polar fleece. Again, I use a guide, to get uniform shapes and sizes. I have used it for cutting out paper patterns on fabric. The problem with that is having a suitable cutting surface that is large enough for the entire piece. Really, I use mine whenever I think it will work. They are very sharp! If you choose to use one, be extremely careful. My son cut himself with one even though the blade was locked down in the non-cutting position. (He's OK, though. It was minor.)

You can use it to cut a pattern, use it for foundation piecing, stack and whack, quilting, even scrapbooking. Rotary cutters make sewing so much easier!

I agree, they can be used for cutting and piecing quilts, or just cutting any fabric for any reason.

I also keep an old wheel/blade or two around just for cutting paper or anything else that will dull the blade.

(I also use various straight edges, metal or plastic, unless I can cut freehand... and I have various sizes of self-healing mats to cut on)

P.S. It's good to buy a big one if you're going to be using it much...the larger wheel makes cutting easier than the smaller ones.

I use mine for quilting and paper crafts. I don't use it for cutting out a pattern as I don't have a mat large enough to do so. It makes cutting fabric for quilting so much faster, easier and straighter.
