Microsoft word 2003 identifies both lets and let's. I know let's is an abbreviation for let us; but what's lets?

Like you said, "let's" is a contraction of let us. "Lets" is the third person singular case of the present tense of the verb "to let": I let, you let, he/she lets, we let, y'all let, they let. (Notice how all of the other cases are the same. English is weird.)

Let has a few meanings:

Letting, as in bloodletting, which means to prevent or hinder.

And also Let or lets can mean the same as "for rent" .

You would use it anywhere that you need to say lets where "let us" would not make sense.
