Well, in my mind there's always 2 important things to consider BEFORE doing this.
1) Will it smell... immediately or eventually... hmmmm
2) Is it visible with the rug over it... is it a lump in the hallway or a flat stain, scratch on the floor, spilled tuna sandwich... hmmmm.
If neither of these issues are mitigating factors that will render the use of a rug to cover, inappropriate... GO FOR IT!
