Some good answers might be:

1) Surface analysis of Mars will help scientists better understand our own minerals on earth, which could potentially lead to better farming and irrigation practices.

2) Climate data from Mars can help us understand the effects of a saturated carbon dioxide atmosphere, which can be used to develop methods and systems of keeping our atmosphere in a healthy oxygen - CO2 balance.

3) Investigation of water potential on Mars can teach us what happened to the water, which can help us recognize severe drought patterns on earth before they become catastrophic.

4) Technologies used to build Pathfinder will be further researched, and eventually commercialized as products for everyday use.

5) Pathfinder and future missions to Mars could open the door to a Mars experimental colonization opportunity.

Some cynical answers might be:

1) We can send Halliburton and Exxon to Mars to plunder any valuable natural resources

2) We can prove that global warming occurs on Mars, in the noticable absence of SUVs and soccer moms.

3) My taxes will increase as NASA launches more missions to Mars to find water that isn't there.

4) We get to see another spectacular failure as yet another NASA probe smashes to bits on the Mars surface.

5) I will have to listen to more Mars colonization nonsense from slack-jawed day dreamers.

hmm... dunno if I can make 5...

1) It helped confirm the airbag landing technique is a good idea

2) More knowledge about Mars is good.. hopefully people will go there in our lifetime

3) Showed rovers can (sometimes!) provide useful data far beyond their life expectancy
