now I can`t switch off properly - I have to keep going through hibernation mode to switch off.(it is a laptop) Any ideas what is wrong? As I said everything else has speeded up now since I used system restore.

Right click a space on your task bar a cascade will open and click task manager then click shut down.

Sounds like there is a program that just refuses to shut down for you, try checking your computer for spyware (the program ad-aware is great for checking/cleaning it)

You can try changing your power management settings, but I don't see why that would cause you to be unable to shut down the computer.

Shutting down your computer manually from Hibernation mode is also not good for your laptops power supply, they are 10x more susceptible to breaking then desktop ones...so you should get this problem fixed asap.
