Some cities have a recycling centre. You just turn up with your fridge under your arm or in your car, and they take it from there. Some may charge a small fee, but all the ones I know both in the UK and here in Spain offer this as a free service to private individuals.

First you have to have the coolant removed. It must be done by a professional and tagged, stating as such.

Once that is done you can throw it away. Does your city offer a large pick-up? Or you can rent a roll off dumpster and throw it away that way. Or take it to a near by transfer station. A transfer station is a place that will take garage, sort it and dispose of it correctly.
