The lasting machine doesnt stitch the leather (upper )of the shoe with the sole, that's incorrect. A last is a mould of the shoe, which maybe of metal, wood, or kinds of plastics. Since the last is a three dimensional surface and the upper is a two dimensional surface, it is difficult to fix the upper onto the last without creases on the edges. The lasting maching pulls the leather very tightly and then tries to fix it onto the last with minimal creases.

It is mostly a hydraulic maching.
