Go to a small boutique. It might be a little more expensive but they usually have a nice selection of rare dresses. I paid 500 for mine but it was well worth knowing no one would have my dress because they weren't many made.

my opinion and advice:
i would go dress shopping at any local stores ie: dillards, macys, ross, etc. find a dress that you would like and then add to it or take away from it to make it your own. u can find a really good tailor for very cheap. that way, the dress is made for you and it would fit your body perfectly. for my prom (years ago lol) i went to dillards and got a dress. the color was beautiful for my skin tone but the style was awful. but i brought it for 40 dollars (it was on clearance), took it to my tailor, had it altered, put a slit on the side, and had the back taken down for only 30 dollars. so i only spent 70 total. if you did it that way, the dress will represent you and you will feel very confident in the dress because it was made for you (in essence.) hope this helps and have a blast at prom!

I don't know where you live, but Group USA has a huge assortment of gowns. They are sure to have one you will love.
To be sure no one else has the same gown, you'll have to make one yourself or alter one you buy to look unique.
