My daughter is in 6th grade and is failing math. We sit her down and explain it to her but she doesnt seem to catch on. Do you know of any kind of help for her age group that will help teach her? I have a conference with her teacher tomorrow night but we go through this every time and they never seem to be able to offer her any kind of help.

You also might want to ask about having your daughter evaluated for special education. Just like some people have dyslexia which impedes their reading ability, people can have discalcula which hinders their ability to work with numbers and number concepts A good evalution will either rule this out or give you an indication of where her difficulties lie and help point teachers in the right direction to help. It sound slike this has been a problem for a long time and someone needs to take a serious look at your daughter's learning style and skills and try to figure out a new way to teach the same things. Hitting her over the head with the same teaching method every year hasn't helped yet. It probably won't start to any time soon.

Ask your daughter's teacher or computer teacher for a software program that will help. There are many good ones out there and using a computer makes learning more fun. Check in bookstores or computer stores for titles that are for her age - MathBlasters is one that comes to mind.
Good luck

You could try some tutoring. Thee is some pretty good practice at A+math.com www.k12.aleks.com is a good program, but you have to pay for it. If she is struggling to remember what she is taught I would have her tested. They are learning that there are more and more learning disabilities that specifically hinder students from learning math.
