You have to give up meat(Catholics) today so you get your fill on Tuesday was basically the idea. The Fat idea was that you got fat because the fasting that was to start.

To eat and drink in excess before the fasting of lent begins. The Wed after fat Tuesday is Ash Wednesday, and usually the time for catholics to give something up for lent, IE candy, fast food, etc. And the fasting or giving up of something lasts for 40 days.

it's the day down south where everyone eats sweets, because the following day (today) is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent. Many people give up sweets and sugar for lent, so this is one last day of celebration with sweets before they have to give them up for 40 days. I only know this cuz my best friend is from Louisiana! lol

It is sort of a last blowout before the solemn time of lent. (note this is in the Catholic religion) because during the 40 days of lent you are suppposed to give something up for Jesus because his life was sacrificed so we could be saved.

It begins the Lentin Season! Catholics start Lent and they must give up something and on every friday they cannot eat any type of meat...only fish...all in preparation of Good Friday and the coming of Jesus again.
