psycotherapy has worked for me, but I think it is important to realize that most people in the Mental health care field got into it because they felt like something was wrong with them, In my experiance most of them never figure it out, and many can cause more trouble through projecting thier problems. The person has to be the right person and you have to be willing. Higher functioning people can be very complicated because as a young child they may ascribe cause and effect to circumstances they don't fully understand. An example is that an abused child whose parent is often kind may become emotionaly drawn to abusers because to them that is what they learned to accept as Love.

Counseling only works if you allow it to run it's course and you let it repair or resolve the problems within yourself. Yes, the first step is to admit that you have a problem and get yourself into counseling, but that is not the only step. Some situations take more time than others and every situation is different. For couples counseling, both parties have to allow the process to work. If anyone gives up on it, the result may not be what you had originally hoped for. Often the result is not what you hoped for, but still a result. You just refuse to accept it. Things don't always work out the way you want.

Yes, it does work when both parties are equally committed to acting on the advice given. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case.
Also, it sometimes takes a while to get the right type of counseling or for a therapist to get to the true root of a problem.
My hubby and I have been to 3 different counselors, all of them had good ideas and feedback, but only one was able to help us. This counselor used an entirely different approach and taught us skills to use in our everyday lives...and it's worked beautifully! We're so thankful for what she's taught us.
Our home is so much happier and we rarely fight any more!!!

didn't work for us!
all it did was make us come out and be more truthful with eachother (only while we were in her office), homelife went back to the SOS
Everyone is saying look at Dr. Phil and his guests...but how many of those couples actually are happier or have a MUCH BETTER relationship a couple of years after the show?!?!
yeah right!!!

"Counseling" doesn't work- the person has to work. The person has to be open to change, open to see problems, and open to try new solutions. A lot of people have no intention of changing and use counseling to "prove" they are right to be hopeless.

Counseling only works if you want it to. You have to be willing to go in with an open mind and heart, if you don't it won't work.
