If you just need an off-the-shelf knee brace, you can get it at your local pharmacy.

You can expect the family practice doc to make sure that your complaints aren't stemming from something that could kill you - in a way, that is their main job. Once they have made that determination, hopefully they will send you to physical therapy.

You physical therapist is the member of your healthcare team that is an expert in biomechanics and movement science. They will help you get to the bottom of the problem with your knee.

Go to APTA.org, click on "find a PT", and search your home area for a specialist in orthopedic or sports PT (OCS or SCS after their name).

Good luck!
