Like all wars of the time, the movement of troops in the English Civil War was fluid, and it is wrong to think of them being based in any particular geographical location. Some cities were Royalist - Oxford for example, where Charles I was based for a time, some, like London for the Parliamentarians. Royalists also based themselves in the medieval castles that were still standing and defensible. When these were taken, they tended to be knocked down or 'slighted' which one reason there are so many ruined castles - one such example is Corfe Castle in Dorset.

In 1642 at the oubreak of the civil war:

The Parliamentarians were in control of: London, Norwich, Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol, Gloucester, Exeter and most of southern England.

The Royalists meanwhile were in control of: Wales, Chester, Oxford, Preston, York and most of northern England
