This is a racially loaded term.

It means someone who gives something and thing wants it back.

Early settlers used this term because they did not understand the ways of Native people. Native people believed in sharing, helping out one another, and living communally. They would allow settlers to borrow necessary items but when they wanted it back the settlers were suprised. Keep in mind the item was never given to the settler in the first place, the settler just assumed ownership.

It is also true that the word Indian was often used to denote something as false. This is obviousally racially loaded.
Some examples are: Indian Summer and Indian Tea.

The term has obvious negative connotations. Many assume that Native people would give something to someone and steal it back. This is a stereotype and is not true. It is not a term one should use. It is culturally insensitive, promotes stereotypes, and promotes racism.

because our government would give land to the indians but if gold or something they wanted was found on the land they would just take it back and give them some other land until they wanted it back also. so the term indian giver refers to giving someone something and then taking it back. if you was labeled as an indian giver no one wanted to do any trading or business with you.
