How to work with the Word Press dashboard to create a website that is more than a weblog?

I am not the one that installed Word Press but I am the one that is administrating the new site (adding content) but I need a source/guide for what it can and cannot do. I will be using Word Press instead of a "regular" website. I do not want the site to appear as blog site. I will need to have static pages. I can create pages (parent pages and subordinate pages that appear as links in the sidebar.)

I need a Word Press for Dummies but it will not be available until Aug 07. My needs are not how to install plugins ... I have a company setting up Word Press ... what I need is a How To after Word Press is up and running.
