They don't need help.
They are happy people just how they are.

But something that would help is if more
people knew ASL, I took a two year course
and I still don't know enough.

It would be more supportive to them if there
was more then just another Deaf person to help.

Learn ASL. :)

What makes you think Deaf people need help? Sure, we may not be able to hear like hearing people do, but we can do just as well as hearing people do.

But if you really wanted to "help", learning American Sign Language would be a good start. Other than that, don't try to "help". Really. I've been deaf for 19 years, and yes, I've had difficulty at times, but I wouldn't want "help" from anyone unless I asked for it. And the Deaf are pretty proud people too, for the most part.

My best advice would be to provide education to the general education about the deaf population so that we can better understand their needs. I think that the main problem that exists between any type of population that has an exceptionalities and the general population is that there is a lack of understanding. I have observed that when people are arond someone who is deaf, they behave differently, even if they know that the individual can read lips and understand what they are saying. I feel it is a lack of education. Also, learning sign language is always beneficial and it is important that the resources that exist are made readily available for the deaf population, ie. that there is not a barrier of huge expense.

i think one way that we can help deaf people, is to really learn and develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of their culture. just this year, i took up an American Sign Language class in my school as an elective, and i have learned a tremendous amount... i have not only learned how to sign, but also i have learned about the history of the deaf people and all of the suffering and opression that they have faced throughout the years and continue to face currently...

They don't need help they are regular people. But I know that they might have trouble talking to hearing people or understanding others, so you can learn sign language and translate and become their friends. It can be hard for deaf people to make friends.

"Those people" don't need ur help and aren't asking u for anything. The hearing impaired r very self reliant people and can do for themselves in the hearing world very well. What they do lack is understanding from the hearing world that they r as normal as u and I. They can do everything hearing people can do and have many inventions that r now available for their use to help them cope with everyday living in the hearing world like tdd/tty's for speaking on the phone with the hearing world through relays in their state, light switches which indicate to the hearing impaired that someone is at the door or the phone is ringing with distinctions for either noise, hearing impaired aids like trained animals (dogs mainly) to alert them of danger and other things. They drive, they communicate with sign language, they have hearing aids to help them hear certain sounds, they dance and party just like u and me. They r absolutely normal just some r not able to hear as well as u and I. I think that their impairment can also be a blessing sometimes cuz they don't have to hear the ugliness that some people speak especially those that treat hearing impaired people like "those or these" people. Get the picture? I had a hearing impaired roommate for 14 yrs. and we, my family and I loved him to pieces we all learned sign language and now we all enjoy the privilege of saying we speak 3 languages and can talk to each other without using words it's great fun.

First of all--don't assume Deaf--or other people with disabilities--need your help.

What people with disabilities "need" is to be treated like human beings. Not subjected to your self-serving desire to make yourself feel good py making us objects of your charity.

And you can start by NOT asking what to do about "those" people--and start asking people with disabilities what we wan tand need.

If you actually want to do something--try learning ASL (American Sign Laanguage)--and do some reading to educate yourself: Heres some titles to get you started:

Scotch, R. From Good Will to Civil Rights
Litton, S Claiming Disability
Chrleton--Nothing About Us Withoutus.
