DC to Ac can be done with a motor/generatort set, an oscillator or an inverter.

We use a rectifying circuit to go from ac to dc.

An electrical/electronic device called an "Inverter", converts DC to AC.

To convert AC to DC, a rectifier diode is used within an electrical device usually called a "power supply" (of which there are many types).

Try germanium diodes, these have a much lower forward turn on voltage than silicone diodes, and are used for signal work in radio circuits, for example filtering out the audio signal from a weak radio signal. They are however a lot more sensitive to heat so be careful when soldering.
