Was it because of the Bill Murray movie or was Groundhog Day associated to this before? I find it interesting this accosiation is so wide spread. This is a quote from a recent news story ""Groundhog Day" at Kosovo talks ":

The movie was a smash hit in Europe. The Europeans loved the whole idea behind the movie, and it quickly became an American made cult classic in Europe.

The movie did it. It could have been any day, but they happened to pick groundhog day to fit the storyline of him being a weatherman.
