Nine days ago, my five year old got a bunny for her b-day. Three days ago, I came home from work to find two babies in the cage. One alive; one dead. I thought that maybe the one had been stillborn and she was still in labor.

She didn't have anymore until yesterday after noon , when I found a second dead one. I know that it was not in the cage the previous day. My major concern is that these babies are not small and pink. They were all at least 2-3 inches long and they had fuzz on them. The mother did not leave any signs that she attempted to eat them, although she did chew the cord off on both.

Is it possible that she went too far overdue and the two died as a result. The mother seems to feel fine, is eating well, and nursing the baby. I still see some spotting though and have been spot cleaning her cage. I cannot afford to take her to the vet as we didn't plan on a bunny, let alone babies. She is a dwarf and she was NOT obviously pregnant or overweight.

It's normal for a rabbit to have some babies that do not make it. As for the length between births this is also normal. The best plan for now is to not touch the babies any more then necessary. Take a shoe back and put some straw or towels (towels are a little messier for the rabbit to put it's babies. Make sure if you are going to touch the babies to rub them momma down first so the babies smell like her not you. Rabbits will stop taking care of the new babies if they don't smell like them. Baby rabbits are always pink sometimes with black spots and so forth and have fuzz on them....this is all normal.

Rabbits don't need much guidance...they know what to do naturally. As long as the mom is still taking care of the babies and is eating and drinking herself everything should be fine. As they get older and grow their ears and eyes will start to open and they will start exploring.

My best suggestion to you to make sure they are not on metal and don't touch them more then you have to. Other then that enjoy. But you are doing everything fine and all the above is norma.

Enjoy your new pets!

My cousin's have bred rabbits for awhile now, and usually one or two will die either because the mother accidently suffocated them, or she didn't have enough milk for them, or she ate them. I wouldn't worry about it, maybe she knew that one baby was all she could handle.

it is very irresponsible to get a pet if you don't have the funds for vet visits. GO TO THE VET!!!! some vet offices will let you make payments but make sure they are qualified exotic vet. it's such a shame that people can be that irresponsible and have a kid. what kind of example are setting for the child? i don't care if you think that i'm rude, you know it's true.
