People rally around symbols. Even without true power the royal family is a symbol of the country as a whole. If they are happy and doing well the people feel happy. If they have personal crisis then the country is in crisis.
They truly have no purpose once the people stop believing in them as a symbol.

Well, they have no official power, and the property and wealth is theirs as private citizens, so there is nothing that can be done except to ignore them and stop treating them like celebs just because they come from a once royal blood line.

Actually they do have some real power! When the British get tired of supporting them I guess as they aren't even goodwill ambassadors anymore!

Of course the Monarchy in the UK has powers. every soldier pledges his allegiance to the queen. she is head of state. and has powers that would boggle your imagination.

Why don't we just strip you of all belongings and whip you down the street for good measure? That makes just as much sense and is just as illegal as what you are suggesting!
