First I would try taking it back and getting a bigger size...if that's not a option, hand wash in cool water and either hang to dry or lay flat on a drying rack...good luck! :)

Unless the cotton fabric is shrink proof one cannot say. But modern cotton fabrics are processed that way and are shrink proof. So dont wash it washing machine but hand wash it and spread the shirt on a plastic sheet make a mark of its length and breadth. No wash it with mild detergents and in luke worm water and risnse it carefully just soak and take out and repeat so that soap is washed. Now spread it on the plastic sheet to see whether it is stretched as before,Now dry it in shade and not in sunlight or in drier. After one such treatment you can do further wash in machine.

Wash it in cool water and hang dry. Never put it in the dryer! I have saved thousands of tight fitting shirts, sweaters, and so forth for my 5 kids by doing it this way.

Have it dry cleaned. If you do it yourself (make sure it is washable fabric first) use only cold water and air dry it, some dryers have an air dry setting. Heat will cause it to shrink.

It all depends on the fabric. If it has any cotton in it, it will shrink. If it is polyester or rayon, it will not shrink. Handwash your shirt in cold water and lay flat to dry. NO DRYER!!!

Don't over dry it in the dryer. If you do put it in the dryer take it out just slightly damp and hang it up to dry the rest of the way.
