Vigo Mortenson(sp?) comes to mind. He was Aragorn in the Lord of The Rings movies and really got into the whole thing. For example, he alwasy insisted on using his real sword in all his scenes so he could get the real effect of dealing with a swords wieght. Pretty cool.

Mel Gibson is also a history buff as well as Peter Jackson. And Robin Williams plays historical miniatures.

Mel Gibson?? I mean he's not technically British, and neither was his character in Braveheart, but look at all the historical movies he's made.
