Japanese auto makers INSPECT their cars at and durring the assembly line (100% inspection) American auto makers do not...

In the most general terms, Japanese cards are considered to be more reliable than American cars because they're designed to last longer, engineered to strict tolerances, and quality checked to a much greater degree than American cars. That was true about 10-15 years ago, but it's no longer true. Did you know that Toyota recalled more vehicles than it sold in the U.S. last year? Don't believe what the mainstream media is telling you -- Toyota is undergoing a HUGE push to pass General Motors as the #1 car company in the world, and they're starting to get sloppy. As for the American cars, they really have closed the reliability gap with the Japanese, but you wouldn't know that to hear Consumer Reports tell it. They're hopelessly biased toward the Japanese auto makers, so there's no way you're going to get an honest appraisal on an American car from Consumer Reports. You're better off checking out J.D. Power.

I've been asking myself that for years. My first car I bought was brand new. A Camaro...my dream car. The Transmission went out after a month, the engine was blown after 3 years.
I vowed never to buy another American car again and have had great luck.
Mazda RXZ : loved it
Toyota Sentra...ran great until I wrecked it. Cheap car
Honda Accord EX, love love loved it. This car was so awesome and never ever let me down.
I now have a Lexus, had it for 6 months, runs great no problems and very sexy.
