.....But they usually go away within a day or two. I am sure that it is just clogged milk ducts but what can I do to alleviate the discomfort. This has happened every couple of weeks since I started breastfeeding her over a year ago. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

When I got clogged milk ducts, my doctor told me to nurse from that side as much as possible and to pump more than usual to get the milk flowing from there. They also said to hop in the shower and turn the water as hot as you can stand it and let it run over your breasts. Hot packs work good also. These things will help to unclogg the ducts and relieve the discomfort.

Yes, they are definitely clogged ducts. I actually seem to get them when I wear nursing bras, believe it or not. What helps me is always start with the affected side and to do breast compressions while nursing (slide your thumb across the lump towards the nipple). Hot showers help to alleviate the pain, but for some people, it actually makes it worse because it stimulates milk production.
Good luck!

I had the same problem. At first I'd freak, but the lump would go away, so I knew it was milk. I found a heating pad for 5 minutes would help - just be sure to have a nursing pad in the right place ;) I managed to nurse all 3 of my children for over a year. I wasn't so uncomfortable that I thought about stopping. Best of luck to you!

Hot compresses and hot showers are a good idea along with gentle massage. Wash your nipples only with water, not soap. If you are really concerned, you should see a doctor or talk to someone at the La Leche League. And as a mother of three, breastfeed as long as you can because it is good for your child's health.

what has worked for me is hot compresses hot enough that you can handle it, if that don't work then do opposite, do ice packs. depending on u everyone is deferent but heat works excellent for me. good luck cuz i know how painful it is.

Stop breastfeeding. The child should be drinking from a sippy cup by now.

stop nursing this child needs whole milk and food now. there's nothing nutritional coming from you anymore and see your doctor they can prescribe something to dry you up and to stop the lumps
