Probably expensive tbh.. although I don't trully know. For something like that, if not under warranty, I'd take to a specialist instead of the stealer (dealer).

I happened to read this yesterday and it mentioned one sign of a blown head gasket:

When is sludge not sludge?

Easy. When it's an oil and water emulsion from a leaking or blown head gasket. If this happens, you get a whitish cream coloured sludge on the inside of the oil filler cap.

Also you might want to do some of the tests to check its your head gasket as mentioned here:

Maybe check the ukmkiv forums.. (I know yours is Audi) as loads of knowledgable people there.. and could perhaps point you in right direction for your A4.

Here is first thread I looked at using search term "losing water".. and there seemed to be quite a few threads.

Good luck.

Get a chemical test done on your coolant system if the head gasket is gone then gas will escape into your coolant this will then be picked up by this simple test.Check the floor mats are not wet this would indicate a leak from your car heater system. Is there any emulsified oil in the coolant ?The scheduled time for both head gaskets is 10.5 hours

Check under carpets in foot wells for any sign of coolant, not unknown for the heater matrix to spring a leak.
