He's just developing an interest in hockey (mostly my fault) and I was thinking, since winter is just about over, that he should learn how to skate and stickhandle on inlines rather than ice. Especially since his folks can't get out on the ice with him. Any advice or opinions on the type of gear that would be best for him would be apreciated.
Thanks

I totally agree that he has to learn to develop skating skills on ice. I just thought that since ice is going to be hard to find over the next several months, inlines would be the next best thing. This way he could get started on learning stickhandling and various other skills right away while he's really fired up about hockey.

Visit Play it again Sports' website for locations near you! They sell quality new and used hockey equipment.

well, just to keep you up to speed,...although the inline idea is good for stickhandling development, it harms the skating skills. The propulsion is different for roller than blades, so make sure he gets enough "ICE" time too.

as for equipment, talk to a few sports stores (not just one - they try to sell you everything you don't need), talk to a few, get a feel for what they're saying.

and ask about used equipment, at the 7-yr-old age, equipment is practically still new when it is grown out of.

oh, and just let him play and have fun -- don't be an aggressive hockey-parent. you both thank each other later in life.

In-lines are better than not skating and it will make the transition easier, but in all honesty if you want him to learn to ice skate, put him on the ice

Used.

Skates, helmet, stick, puck/ball, elbow pads, gloves, and knee pads should get him going.

I say used as he will outgrow the skates and likely the other gear before too long.

Good luck...

When they're 7, they're going to outgrow it so fast that you don't need to get expensive stuff. Try and find a gear swap or a used equipment store and get used gear.

idk if he played hockey before....but definitely go used. its way 2 expensive and he'll quit or outgrow it very soon. You can probably get away w/ some of the cheaper brands while hes young
