Under the ownership of Gibson, Epiphone made some of the best guitars in the 60's. Epiphone's quality dropped when they started manufacturing their guitars in Japan in the 1970's. Today, they are made in China, so they aren't quite up to standard of Gibson's own line of guitars.

Epiphone may have been a separate company at the time. I'm not sure of the history. But current day Epiphones are very good guitars for the money. Frank and Ray from My Chemical Romance both play Epiphone guitars.

I can speak from experience..Epiphone guitars are an excellent choice.I own a Epiphone Les Paul Studio and I love it!! The tone, the playability, the cost(alot cheaper then Gibson). Now granted some of the hardware might be cheasier on Epiphones,(tuning gears, tail peice, pick guard..ect)..I see what you're saying though...why did Randy Rhoades pick Jackson? Why did Dime go with Washburn/Dean?They like them!!

I use an Epiphone ES-335 type similar to what John Lennon played. it's a great sounding guitar at half the price of an original Gibson or other name brand.
Perhaps they were trying to keep costs down?
