The amount of time an amendment will take can vary greatly... also the legislative process varies from state to state, so your state's process could be very different than the one I am familiar with here. Basically the amount of time all comes down to how complicated the amendment is to write etc... not to mention how busy the drafter of the amendment is.... for example legislative counsel here in my state is incredibly backed up and I have been waiting on stuff for months.

I assume you mean you filed an amended Federal tax return from 2005 or prior. Usually the IRS will send you a letter often in duplicate when they are in the process of reviewing your changes. They will then send you a letter describing whether they agree with your changes and to what extent. They will then send you a check for the additional monies they owe you plus interest. To track it down you would have to call the IRS directly. I do not believe you can track an amended return online which you can normally do with returns as originally filed i.e your 2006 return.

this time of year amendments generally get put on the back burner because current year returns are being filed ......yes there are people who deal only with 1040x but still with the volume of 2006 that comes in (roughly in the 100s of millions) you may have to wait at least a few months....which isnt bad considering that paper returns generally take 6-8 weeks
