No man is an island as the old adage goes. In similar manner, if my antivirus fails on me and my machine becomes a zombie, it might affect your security in such a way that your mailbox might be spammed from my machine if I have a copy of your email address. Incidentally, you might be protected by your own antivirus but then again it will still affect you in terms of processor utilization in containing the spam.

If I understand your question...

Antivirus software and security software CAN conflict, if they come from different companies. Typically, however, they co-exist fairly well as long as they don't overlap in functionality (e.g., don't run two anti-virus programs at the same time).
