Armand is the leader of the Vampire Coven that occupies and performs in the Theatres d'Vampyres, and it is indeed in the book and not purely an invention of the film.

However, there is more history to the Theater than elucidated in the film, and if you read the first two books (Interview with the Vampire, and The Vampire Lestat), you will get some further very interesting information regarding this.

I recommend them very highly.

The Theater was in the book, in fact it was better in the book. I have seen the movie and read the book, and although the film is very good, you should read the book. You won't be disappointed.

It's somewhere in the Vampire Chronicles, but I'm not which book it was in. The moviemakers didn't invent it.
