I will be leaving the middle of April and make it a weekend drive.

Trying to avoid snow. Maybe through Vegas?

On long road trips like that I join Triple A and have them put together a strip trip map for me. Unfortunately my Atlases are buried, I don't have all boxes unpacked yet. But you would want to take I-80 west as a start then drop south to Colorado. Been too many years since I was in CA, and the memory is not what it used to be. Take a look at these'

There is no Southern route that won't take you at least 300 miles out of your way San Francisco -Barstow- Albuquerque- Denver adds up to about 1600 miles
Even if you drive like I do -1000+ miles per day you can't realistically do San Francisco to Denver and back on a weekend , not if you intend to enjoy the weekend.
I would suggest that you fly it instead,

I-80 should take you right into Denver.
