This small pipe is going upwards. It has just leaked out water for the first time. What should I do ? And why on earth is the pipe open??

It is a vent pipe that probably doubles as a cleanout. Vent pipes are necessary for proper water flow in sewer systems, however the fact that it terminates inside the house is very unaccaptable and not to any building code that I can even imagine. The vent pipe should run all the way to your roof.

What might have happened, is a plumber cut the vent pipe to get a snake into the drain, and he left it wide open.

You really need to get a (good) plumber to take a look at the whole situation.

Besides the leak, there is a danger of nasty poison sewer gasses getting into your home (when it should be vented out the roof).

I assume you have a double sink with two drains and there is a pipe with a slip-joint fitting between the two drains but more to the left drain than the right?

That is a Mickey-Mouse plumbing job. I had the same thing when I moved into my home (fixer-upper) and the last owner's did a lot of work with used everything it seems.

The pipe needs to be replaced. Most plumbing shops, if you remove the pipe and take it down to them, will direct you to the proper pipe you need.

I've heard a lot of explanations about those pipes. From it being for a garbage disposal (I don't see how though) to it being needed for dishwasher drainage (still don't see how). All I know is it not the right pipe.

Is this the kitchen?? If it is, it sounds like the pipe that the dishwasher used to be connected to. It's a 11/2" pipe with about a 1/2" Y on it. If it is, and you don't use the dishwasher just plug it........
