Apparently the Joker was added sometime in the 19th century as the highest card in the deck. It become more widely spread because of the popularity of poker. But it is from wikipedia, so that information could be inaccurate.

when they were first made ,it gave you two extra cards in the pack in case you lost 1 or 2 and not have to buy another pack(so still produced as ) and you could name the card as the missing one !!! (hence jokers are wild)

We used to use them as wild cards in the game 'Canasta'. Brilliant game, wish I could remember how to play it.

i don't know. seems whatever game i play, i always have to take them out first.

i think they are used for some games though, as wild cards probably.

Well, for example if you play lowball (poker) it can be use as an A, or to complete for straights, flushs.
