Its very hard to call, each home nation has one that could be classed as the Best British player in history.
Northern Ireland - George Best
Wales - John Charles
Scotland - Jimmy Johnstone
England - Bobby Moore
I would rate them like this but others would be different:
1. John Charles
2. Jimmy Johnstone
3. George Best
4. Bobby Moore

As far as i am aware the best british player of all time from my friends who've watched the very very best play: Best, Bell, Marsh, Busby Babes, Charlton, Moore, etc, etc.
Is that Sir Stanley Matthews was our best ever player, played til he was nearly 50 a brilliant athlete that in todays money even Chelski would go bankrupt buying
On another note the primadonnas in the modern game do not compare to the likes of Matthews, Best, Moore as its so much easier for them. During Matthew's time players weren't rich and barely earned more than the average punter it was much harder to be a footballer and required much more commitment. There are many players that have been underestimated in terms of their talent and cos they weren't at the most fashionable clubs.
Best British player in the modern game is a very hard choice - a few years ago i'd have said Beckham or Owen, but Gerrards performances at the highest level have been magnificent and i'd have to choose him now.

Bobby Moore.
Best never proved himself against top international teams.
He didn't captain his club or country.
He never won a piece of silverware at International level.
I don't think that he ever played in the final stages of the World or European cups?
He played in a bad international side where he was bound to stand out big time.
