Do you have the copper or the hormonal one? Do you like it and would you reccommend it?

I had a copper coil for the last 12 years and it was ok apart from more recently when it caused abnormally prolonged and heavy bleeding.

I subsequently had my last copper coil changed for the Mirena and have had no problems so far. I'm looking forward to the days of minimal bleeding and no pain!

It's early days for me with the Mirena but many of my friends have it and can't rate it highly enough.

I'd definitely recommend having the coil because you don't have to think about it once it is in. No more remembering to take pills hurrah!

*EDIT* Kelly C, have a word with your Dr about the Mirena because I don't handle hormones well either (think raging screaming banshee mood swings and hellish headaches) The way it was explained to me was that it is not the same as ingesting hormones orally, the Mirena is concentrated in a localised area (ie the uterus) and so the majority of the hormone doesn't get absorbed into the bloodstream in the same way as oral contraceptives. I've had the Mirena since December and so far haven't had any issues with the hormone element at all (other than experiencing much lighter bleeding for a shorter amount of time) Like my Dr told me, if the Mirena doesn't suit you, you just get it taken out, but it might be worthwhile investigating the pro's and cons further to see whether you might benefit from it after all?

Hey Avanish,

Actually, condoms & pills are not the best. Condoms break & some girls can be allergic, some guys lose their erections when trying to put them on or don't know how to put them on. Speaking from experience, you CAN get pregnant on the pill. It MUST be taken at the exact same time every day.

If you're in a monogamous relationship & don't wish to have kids in your immediate future, IUD's are an excellent form of birth control. Without insurance they are VERY expensive but are the most effective form (as long as you're not sleeping around). They also don't protect against HIV or STD's. But in terms of preventing pregnancy they're great.

I'm considering getting one once I have enough money. I'll probably wind up with the copper one as my body can't handle hormonal birth control.

I had the copper IUD for 6 yrs and started spotting and my doctor recommended I have it removed for a few months to let me uterus "recover". When I had it I loved it! My periods were shorter and lighter and it was a no fuss deal. I only started having problems after 6 yrs of use. I got pregnant while it was out and after the birth of my child I had another one inserted, but my uterus expelled it after a few days. Now I use the NuvaRing. It's nice to not have to fuss with birth control every day. Good Luck~

I have the Mirena and love it. The hormones pretty much stay localized in the uterus and you don't even notice them. I highly recommend it. I no longer have heavy painful periods........and no PMS.
