You can create photo-realistic gems and 3D animation lends itself well to shiny plastic materials. The next thing is the learning curve to use a 3D software package. That is a steep learning curve. 3D is only going to give you the ability to make video and to pose your object. If all you want is photo-realism with glitters that move, check out the 2nd link for Xara. If you still want to start with 3D, check out the 1st link below for Blender (it's free for the download). Xara is affordable for the Windows and free for the Linux.

Xara has several products. The Illustration program would be the easiest and the 3D product is pretty easy.

A good, free program to use that runs on Windows, *nix or Mac is Wings3D. This should be perfect for you, minimal learning curve. The only caveat is no animation support, but for jewelry and precious stones you don't really need it.

There are a range of 3d modeling packages you could use. some goods ones are cinema 4D, 3ds mac, mya and vue

I would suggest Mya as it is turns out the best results, but it will take some time to learn.
