I admire you for being ambitious enough to tackle a book that is so challenging for you. That kind of challenge will help you increase your reading skills.

My recommendation for you is to have a basic understanding of the story before you tackle the book. Using a system such as Cliff Notes will give you a broad overview of the book. Then tackle the book in small doses. Read the Cliff Notes about a particular chapter (focus only on the story and not hte parts about symbolism and stuff). Then read the chapter in the book. Make sure you understand what has happened before going further. It may help you if throughout the book you take a moment to summarize things in your own words. Every three pages or so stop and make sure you understand what just occured. The old fashioned language may be throwing you off but if you take it slowly and transfer it into your own words I think you will be better off. If you just ask people to tell you about the story and its important parts you wont understand it for yourself- making it harder to do well on your test.

best thing for you to do is to use a good dictionary.
if you have an actualy dictionary at home- use it, for every word you are not sure.
you might think it will slow you down- but you will understand the story, and enjoy it much more.

you can use an online dictionary too - http://dictionary.reference.com/
is an awesome site.

good luck and have fun :)
