I'm with a company that was asked by one of its vendors to put a link on its page to boost their search engine ranking. While we would like to accomodate them, we don't prefer to have their link visible to visitors to our site. Can we still make a link to their site, but hidden from view without breaking SEO rules? For example, could we make a page like www.blahblahblah.com/otherlinks.html and put their link on it, but not have this otherlinks.html page accessible via any of our pages? Would this still be picked up by search engines to boost the other companies site ranking?

One way of course is to hide that link so visitors cannot see it. When we were still doing reciprocal linking, one of our requirements is that there must be a way from the homepage to reach their link pages just like ours because of this practice of hiding the links from the visitors. However, they may not mind and check if the page is accessible from anywhere on your site

While you're at it (since you obviously do not want to link), why don't you tell the search engines that you also don't want the SEs to see the link. Search engines will see the page, unless you specifically instruct them not to read the page

You can put a content="no index" in your metatag or rel="nofollow" after the anchor link so search engines will not read that you actually created a link to that site. This is especially important now since the SEs especially Google has become strict on who you are linking to -- and they prefer that you link only to those sites that are related to your site's theme

The other company won't get any benefit from the link to you - whether from your visitors or the search engines. But for the sake of vendor relations, you can tell them that you did indeed create a link to them - and hope that they won't check your source code and see your nofollow or noindex tags
