I generally buy throughout the year. If I see something that I can afford that I know somebody I know will like I buy it and put it away for birthdays and Christmas. Usually I have all of my Christmas shopping done way before the rush. It feels great to get it done early and have the money to do it instead of buying everything at once and going into debt.

no.
through out the year, keep an eye open for things( preferably, ones the person you are buying for will not buy) and buy them when you see them, or at least make a mental note about them for whenever "shopping time" comes. That way, you either have the present ready, or have an idea about what to get.

Keep your eyes open every time you leave the house. Sometimes I will just see something that is perfect for someone I know and pick it up right then, no matter when it is.
