Aww yes the age old question.."how does he get that tone?" I got your hookup!! Step 1 tune your guitar to what is called dropped d tuning. From bottom to top(fat string to thin) D,A,D,G,B,E....got the tuning?Play the first three strings open...mmmmm...sounding a little familiar? Now bar the same three strings on say 3rd fret...getting there huh? Thats the fastest easiest and cheapest way to get started.Alot of stuff on Undertow, and Aenema, uses this drop d tuning. If you got the cash,a LES Paul custom with PAF pickups will get ya there.(guitar currently used live/studio)To cap it all off drop about $2,000 on a MESA BOOGIE head, and you're there!! Use the drop D tuning, set your amps "gain"/"crunch"/"overdrive" to HOSTILE,with the mids WAAAY up,some nice bassy bottom end...hope this helps(no mesa boogie for me,my "TOOL TONE is GOD LIKE" though, using the tuning an amp settings!!) As far as effects go..pedals a ring modulator,eq to boost the mid range to give you that TOOL growl, wha pedal(not too often)and a tremolo will be a grat start.
