If you are working as a server in a small company should the owners expect you to train and teach service that sells without extra compensation?

I have been asked to be lead or senior server and train in fine dining without extra pay, and I want trainer pay.

Am I out of line? I worked many years for the expertise that I have. It should be worth something..

Definitely not out of line. I've been both the training server, and a manager. One place I was a trainer they paid us 7$ an hour (as opposed to $2.35). We also received a "credit card" good for $100 a month at any of their 16 restaurants in the area. We were required to fill out a report on all visits where we used the card. And they actually conducted training seminars for us, the trainers. That was nice compensation, but rare.

As the manager of a very small family owned restaurant, I certainly could not compensate anyone like that. But what I did do was pay the server being trained 7$ per hour, paid the trainer $5 per hour and all tips go to the trainer. The trainers often tipped out the trainee but I did not make them. And the trainer ate for free (normally 50%). The trainee already gets to eat free for 2 weeks, with the proviso that they work their way through the menu, so as to familiarize themselves with the food.

Think about what they can reasonably afford and go to them with a professional, reasonable presentation of your ideas. They should be open to it. They obviously already think highly of you or they wouldn't let you train in the first place.

Good luck!

You should absolutely get a trainer's wage. Have you mentioned this to your boss? You are going to make less in tips while training and you need to be compensated.

I don't mind being the trainer in our restaurant. The only compensation we get is a free meal that night. Of course I'm a team player.

In my office job we get extra pay when training others. I would think the lead server would get a bit more automatically.

Talk to your boss. Just say it. You believe that if they believe in you that much, you believe you deserve a raise. Be very nice, but firm. If they value you that much, I almost guarantee you get it.
