My Dell Inspiron 8600 was getting slower so I posted a question on this issue.
One of the answers I got was to run msconfig and disable all the option in the last startup.
I followed the instruction and the speed really improved but I noticed the Norton icons has dissapeared from the quick launch and I cant even start Norton internet security form the start menu.
I am wondering if Norton is still working in the Background or has it stopped completley.
I am worried!!

You have to be very careful what you disable in msconfig, it can screw up programs, just like what happened here. Chances are that you disabled something that Norton needs to run. Go back in and check everything, then if you want to, go back and disable things...but first, look up the file name online to see what it is before you disable it.

Unless you know what it is don't disable anything in msconfig what you've done is disable Norton security re-enable everything before you get some thing nasty mscomfig is really only for diagnostic purposes
To speed up you computer first of all run checkdisk then defrag your hard drive.
Now to speed it even more
When you install a program a lot of them insist on running at start up and slows the computer the tell tail sign is usually a line of icons a mile long by the clock open each one of these programs in turn and look for the option to disable at start up most don't need to run
You could also go to start >programs >startup any icons in this folder will run at start up most of the time you don't need them just drag them out and delete then, they waste system resources.

simple, run msconfig again and re-enable ccApp and ctfmon.

you will probably find that the reason your PC is running faster is because it is not running Norton which slows your pc down a lot but will leave you open to picking up a virus which is worst.

Macafee and norton are very bad for slowing your pc down.
try something like AVG which has the added bonus of being free and it also has automatic updates like norton.

but don't forget if you do this uninstall norton afterwards.;

a recent change to your Taskbar settings may mean that System Tray icons, including norton's, are hidden when inactive. To disply all icons in your system tray again, right click on your Taskbar and choose Properties. When the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box opens deselect the Hide inactive icons option and click OK.

It isn't gone. It is disabled in startup. You could go back to msconfig and if you haven't REMOVED it, check the box that will put it back in the startup. Otherwise you go to START | PROGRAMS | Norton (whatever their folder name is) and click on the program.
