My son is half white and half African American, his father is not around, is my son missing out not having a person that looks like him? If yes, what do I do?

I want my son to be proud of who he is, both his white and his african american heritage. What do you suggest?

Fortunately today's society is a little more opened minded when it comes to interracial relationships that produce bi-racial children. But unfortunately there are still some closed minded raciest out here that will make it a little hard for your son. I find that a lot of bi-racial children usually choose one or the other to favor, which is OK just as long as they don't forget who they are or choose to look down on the other race by pretending that they are only white or only African American. Just try to do your best in teaching him about both heritages and teach him to be proud of both no matter what obstacles he encounter thorough out his lifetime.

I'm half Mexican, half black, and my father wasn't around either. The most important thing my Mother did was telling me to never be ashamed of who I was. I think if you keep loving him and just be supportive, he'll be okay. I'm so proud to be mixed, and brought up with a Mother that's a different race, it gave me the chance to meet all kinds of people and to not be racist towards someone who is different. I'm not saying that I would have been some ignorant human being if I grew up with my Father, but I never would have had to deal with having a Mexican mother, a White step dad, and a family of mixed races.
